The Last composer of Rebetico songs, Nikos Pergialis (28.02.1931 - 04.12.2019), would be pleased with today's post.

Some biographical elements you may find here:
https://chess-problems-gr.blogspot.com/2008/09/nikos-pergialis.html

I had proposed in June 2016 the theme Pergialis, which I had described here:

Today I present the Award (01/06/2021, Judge: Mario Guido Garcia) of an Iternational Thematic Tourney for chess composition (Cup of Bucovina 2020), which was focused on Theme Pergialis with great success.

Circle SneK condition - Christmas 2014

In fairy chess, various conditions are introduced each year. Some of them attract the interest of the composers, some stay as curiosities.
The Bulgarian composer Diyan Kostadinov likes to invent new conditions (KoBul Kings, SneK Chess) and recently has announced a tourney for Christmas 2014 with the new condition Circle Snek.

Circle Snek :
When a Queen is captured, a Rook of the same side becomes a Queen.
When a Rook is captured, a Bishop of the same side becomes a Rook.
When a Bishop is captured, a Knight of the same side becomes a Bishop.
When a Knight is captured, a Queen of the same side becomes a Knight.

Only one piece may change its type after a capture. In case of option – the capturing side chooses which piece will be transformed.
The capture and the change of type is a single move. If this full move results in a selfcheck - the capture is forbidden.
The capture of a pawn is normal. The capture is normal also in the case when there is no piece on the board which might be transformed.
Castling with Royal piece is not allowed.

You will find the announcement of the 2nd KoBulChess Thematic Tourney (Christmas Tourney 2014) here : http://kobulchess.com/en/tournaments/announcements/676-kobulchess-2nd-tt-christmas-tourney-2014.html

Theme: All type problems (#/=, H#/H=, S#/S=, HS#/HS= etc.) in 2-4 moves with the fairy condition Circle SneK. Other fairy pieces and conditions are not allowed. Royal pieces can be used of course.

The deadline is 20-Dec-2014.

Wishing you happy holidays, I present an original miniature with the Circle SneK condition, designed in a way to be easily solved. My computer (using WinChloe v3.31) could not see the solution instantly and spent 4 hours and 12 minutes to finish.

Select inside the brackets to see the solution
[1.Bd7 h4 2.Kb6 hxg5(Bb8) 3.Kc7 g6 4.Kd8 g7 5.Bc7 gxf8=Q(Rd7)#].

Since the moves are only 5, the wPh2 must start with a double step and give mate when it reaches the 8th row and be promoted. (Theme Excelsior).
So, the bBh3 must make the first half-move (move B1), (and surely prepare the blocking of bK).
The wP will possibly capture one or two black pieces while marching to promotion and it will mate the bK when he is blocked in the eighth row.
The bK needs 3 moves to reach the eighth row.
The remaining black half-move is needed to complete the block.
I believe that some solvers do not really need to see the hidden solution!

Supplementary results of WCCT-9, 2012-2013

The ninth World Tourney of Chess Compositions, WTCC-9, had awards which we have already published, but there were also many problems with rank outside the first 1-20 in each category.

These problems are published in a special supplementary document, which you can see here.

The only Greek composition was the following. It was marked with 1,5 grades from the judges and it was surely less in value compared to the awarded compositions. But let us see it, if only to understand how difficult is the competition at the world level.

What the composition tourney demanded from the problem was "to have tries with threats A and B and these moves should appear in variations after the key which should have another threat C".

WCCT-9 2012-2013

#2

Tries :
{1.Bd4+? Bxd4!},
{1.Re6+? fxe6!},
{1.b8=Q? [2.Qh8#] Bg8!},
{1.Sxb2? [2.Bd4#] exf3!},
{1.Sc3? [2.Scd5#][2.Bd4#] Bxc3!},
{1.Sb6? [2.Sbd5#][2.Sd7#][2.d7#] Rxb6!}.

Thematic tries :
{1.d7+? A Rxc6!},
{1.Rxa6? [2.d7# A ] Be5!},
{1.bxa6? [2.d7# A ] Be5!},

{1.Sd5+? B Kxf5!},
{1.fxe4? [2.Sd5# B ] Rxe4!},
{1.fxg4? [2.Sd5# B ] hxg4!}.

Key : 1.b8=S! [2.Sd7# C ]
1...Ra7 2.d7# A
1...Bxf5 2.Sd5# B

Here we see two tries with threat A and two tries with threat B, the moves A and B are also tries and they are appearing in variations after the key. Thus there is Theme Urania (One try-move, appears also as threat, appears also in a post-key variation), twice (one for move A and one for move B).
There is a total of 12 tries, some with multiple threats, so this will not be an easy problem to solve.

New blog for Tourneys and Awards

Dear readers, I think that

** the friends of chess composition need a central service for publication of
(1) tourney announcements and
(2) awards of each tourney.

** For this purpose, a blog will be used, named chess-compose,

** The administrators can come from various countries speaking English, Russian, German, Italian or any needed language.

** Each post will be a tourney with key like "2013-03-08 JT Composer-Name-50", where the date will be the deadline date.
(The post will be published and then its date of publication will be changed to be the deadline date. So the "current" tourneys will be staying on top until their deadline is reached).
The post can possibly contain only the link to the relevant site of country, magazine or person.

** Each post will have tags, (like #2, #3, #n, h#n, s#n, fairy, Tourney_Formal, etc), to facilitate the search.

** When an award is published, its link will be appended to the relevand tourney.
This blog will not be a rival of various excellent sites, just a central service.
I have created it, but I can not support it alone, because I do not have information about all tourneys and awards and surely I do not speak all needed languages!

If you think you can serve as administrator, please send a private message to me.
Thank you!

Some news

In this post there are news about chess-relevant publications and tourneys of chess compositions.

Publications

The British Chess Problem Society, (BCPS), has been the publisher of magazine "The Problemist" since many decades. Inside this magazine there were interesting insets. Now you can found them in pdf form using the link http://www.theproblemist.org/supplement-archive.

Many important articles and new compositions are published at the site of Julia Vysotska (http://juliasfairies.com/). For example, you may read an article, published initially in the magazine StrateGems (No.51, 2010), "The Wonderful (new genre) Parry Series", written by the Grand Master Μαιτρ Petko A. Petkov. The page with the articles is http://juliasfairies.com/articles/.

In the Award of the tourney "MT Istokovics Ferenc 70" we see the Greek composer Pavlos Moutecidis with a self-mate in ten moves. See here.

A proposal for a new chess variant, Singularity Chess, was published in the site http://abstractstrategygames.blogspot.gr/2010/10/singularity-chess.html.
Please, do not ask me to compose problems on such a chessboard!
